 About the Trumpet Studio

Learn more about our fantastic trumpet students at our Meet the Students page.

For the 2023-24 school year there are 9 trumpet majors from 6 different states, and they each have a one-hour weekly lesson with Prof. Jose Sibaja and must also sign up for a weekly Trumpet Performance Class.

Our Blair trumpet students participate in the Vanderbilt Symphony Orchestra and the Vanderbilt Wind Symphony every semester. Through these experiences, they perform some of the most important major works of the symphonic repertoire, but also perform and record some of the newest and most cutting-edge works for wind ensemble. Through our unique chamber ensemble program, our trumpet players hone their all-important chamber skills in brass quintets or other small ensembles that are coached weekly by faculty mentors. Our trumpet students are also very active in Vanderbilt’s thriving jazz program, performing primarily with the Downbeat Award-winning Blair Big Band and various jazz combos. Prof. Sibaja also builds in several trumpet ensemble experiences each year, and our trumpet ensemble often competes in the annual National Trumpet Competition.

Our students regularly attend national and international workshops, competitions, and symposia each year and attend some of the most prestigious Summer festivals. Another hallmark of our trumpet program is the amazing guest artists we bring in for short residencies. Recent guest artists include Michael Sachs, Anthony Plog, Jens Lindemann, and the Boston Brass.
